- The story of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church has its origins from the story of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, the second oldest Baptist Church in the state of Michigan. Monroe Missionary was chartered in 1937 by some migrant workers from Tazewell, Tennessee. After its humble beginnings in a two-car garage, the church bought some property and built a church on First Street in Monroe.
- Years later in 1985, a group of people from Monroe Missionary started a new church on March 10, 1985 at the Johnson-Phinney Building located at 22 West Second Street Monroe, MI. The church was named Liberty Missionary Baptist Church and met at this location until January 29, 1989.
- The Rev. Homer G. Fleemon was the first pastor of LMBC, elected on April 14, 1985. The church was then constituted on Sunday, December 1, 1985 with fifty-seven charter members.
- On February 28, 1986 4.5 acres of property at 2221 S. Custer was purchased. A ground breaking ceremony was held on Sunday, May 15, 1988 and construction of the present building began on May 28, 1988.
